Barbara graduated with her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Texas State University in May of 2015 and became a licensed social worker that same year. In 2016 she became a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor and now has the privilege to work as a therapist at Recovery Unplugged in Austin, Texas. During her last semester in school, Barbara requested an internship with an IOP because she knew this was her passion. Her approach is client-centered, meeting the clients where they are, using positive motivation and visualization. She incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Training (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Training, (DBT), and group exercises using Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT).
Barbara comes from a diverse career background, so she brings a lot to her clients at RU Austin. She is a strong proponent for incorporating spiritual connection into recovery and brings a drum meditation to the clients on a weekly basis – thought is energy, sound moves energy, and thoughtful energy creates healing. For most people music is as natural as breathing, so incorporating it into therapy makes intuitive sense. The work she does here reinforces her drive and passion as a social worker. “Recovery begins here, then grows out into the world as a beacon for others.”
